Field Test SEANEXX AIS USB STICK

We have carried out a field test for the SEANEXX AIS USB STICK in order to demonstrate the advantages of the world's smallest AIS receiver. The first test was performed in Caorle in Italy.


 

Field test #1

Task:
• Laptop setup with Seanexx RX200 (dual receiver)
• Mounting of antennas
• Clear view of the ocean
• Reception of AIS data from passing ships, ATONS and base stations

The following hardware was used:
• HP laptop running WIN7.1
• SEANEXX RX200 (dual receiver)
• SEANEXX CONNECT v1.1.3
• OPEN CPN 4.0.0. (free software)
• Ocean map by OpenSEAmap
• Clip antenna with 5m cable (VHF dipole antenna 162-174) CDV-H7
• Magnet base antenna (MIDI-MAG mount 5m COAXSMAPLG FTD) MD-5SP

Examination:
The received data were simultaneously examined and compared with www.marinetraffic.com (live transmission).
 
 

The first test:

The second test:

SEANEXX RX200 with magnet base antenna (MIDI-MAG mount 5m COAXSMAPLG FTD) MD-5SP
The antenna was deliberately not placed on a steel plate or steel component.
The surprising result: AIS data were received from a distance of up to 32.57 NM from a passing vessel with a class A transponder (see image) despite the fact that the antenna was not grounded!
Screenshots were prepared within minutes in order to document the update rate of the AIS illustration on the website www.marinetraffic.com.
The accuracy of both systems was impressive!

Field test #2

We have also tested the SEANEXX RX200 in Trieste for the simultaneous reception of both AIS channels.

Task:
• Laptop setup with Seanexx RX200 (dual receiver)
• Mounting of antennas
• Clear view of the ocean
• Reception of AIS data from passing ships, ATONS and base stations

The first test:

The second test:

Clip antenna with 5m cable (VHF dipole antenna 162-174) CDV-H7 mounted on vehicle roof railing (height approx. 2m)

Conclusion:
Bad weather and the timing of the test outside of peak season were the reasons for somewhat moderate private boat traffic with CLASS B transponders.
